Keeping your coffee fresh is just as important as buying a quality product. Once the coffee is no longer fresh, it will taste stale and won't have all the delicious notes you'll find in a freshly brewed, freshly ground cup of coffee.
There are some tips and tricks to keep your coffee fresh:
First tip is to buy freshly ground coffee, or better yet, grind it yourself! If you don't have a grinder and don't want to buy one, you can grind your own beans at the grocery store or coffee shop.
These days, almost every grocery store will have nearly an entire aisle dedicated to coffee. You will usually find a machine to grind your beans if you don't have your own grinder Or you can also buy whole bean coffee online.
Plus, if you stop by your local coffee shop and buy a bag of their coffee, they'll be more than happy to grind it for you. This is always a great place to try out different roasts and blends to find out which one is your favourite. Not only is this a great place to do some taste testing, but you get freshly ground coffee, and once you start drinking it freshly ground, you'll never go back!
After you bring your glorious coffee home, you'll want to keep it fresh until you actually consume it. It's been a misconception for a long time that you want to freeze your ground coffee to keep it fresh. This is bad for a couple of reasons.
The first reason is that coffee is very porous and will absorb not only moisture, but whatever else you have in the freezer. This is not good for coffee flavors. Also, when you freeze the beans, you remove the natural oils and flavors from the beans, resulting in a smooth coffee.
The best way to store your coffee is in an airtight container. You should store it in a cool, dry, dark place, as moisture, air, heat, and light are the enemies of your precious coffee beans.
Many people like to keep mine in a big Tupperware container in their pantry. Since most pantries have doors, it's always dark and cool. If you don't have a pantry, you may want to store your coffee in a cupboard away from an oven, stove, or any other heat source.
